High water in Kirksville

Jul 25th, 2008 by Todd Kuhns | 0 Comments

Last night as the rains (8” reported) continued, the City activated the Emergency Operations Center and brought in appropriate staff to address the many issues that were occurring.

The Fire Department conducted 15 emergency rescues to remove people from cars. The water was as high at 8’ in some areas and on some roadways.

The Public Works Department worked to close streets, remove debris and help rescue individuals with some of the equipment they had.

The Police Department patrolled the community, manned several intersections and responded to a number of calls.

The Emergency Operations Center was closed this morning at around 7:30 a.m.

We had one employee injured (strained back) and damage to one vehicle (submerged in water).

Kirksville has closed a portion of Franklin Street from LaHarpe to Shepherd. The Highway Patrol has closed a portion of Highway 63 due to concerns of the Country Club pond dam may be breached due to the volume of rain. Truck traffic has been stopped south of town and re-routed by the Highway Patrol. City traffic is being routed to Jamison, Boundary and other routes.

City employees are checking our facilities – including Spur Pond and many of our roadways (asphalt, culverts, washouts, etc.)

Mari reports that City Hall is starting to receive telephone calls from citizens wanting the City to address the high water. Unfortunately, these isn’t much the City can do at this point with the amount of water we have received, as it is an Act of God.

If there is more information to report, I will keep you posted.
